- Pain/Burning Sensation after Intercourse
Overview
A burning sensation after sex is a type of dyspareunia, which is also known as painful sex. Someone may typically experience this due to a lack of lubrication, or with severe friction. However, other causes may require medical attention.
It is more prevalent in females than in males, and is common after menopause and in the postpartum period. Many medical conditions can trigger it, while doctors are not always able to find a direct cause.
Causes of burning after sex
People of all sexes and genders can experience pain after sex. There are several reasons why it can develop. Some of the most common include:
• Anatomical differences
• Allergies and skin irritation
• Sexually transmitted infections (STIs)
• Lack of lubrication
• Psychological and relationship factors
• Rough sex
• Sexual position
• Infections
Symptoms
If you have painful intercourse, you might feel:
• Pain only at sexual entry (penetration)
• Pain with every penetration, including putting in a tampon
• Deep pain during thrusting
• Burning pain or aching pain
• Throbbing pain, lasting hours after intercourse
Treatments and remedies
Proper treatment requires the correct diagnosis. A practitioner who deals in women’s gynecologic care or sexual health is a good option. Many women have been treated for a wide variety of conditions before the correct diagnosis is made.
There is no known cure for vulvodynia, but there are treatments. Left untreated, you may experience anxiety, depression, sleep disturbances, low self-esteem, relationship issues, altered body image and reduced quality of life.
Summary
If you get pain during or after sex, your body may be trying to tell you something is wrong, so don’t ignore it. See your Sexologist or go to a healthcare professional. You may find talking about sex embarrassing, but remember that doctors are used to dealing with problems like this. Pain during sex can affect both men and women.
